Spider Plant - Green

from 4.00

The Variegated Spider Plant or Chlorophytum comosum variegatum, is a very common and popular indoor house plant. In Wellington they are also pretty hardy outside and survive in all kinds of weather.

Spider plants look great in a hanging pot, best planted by itself where the spiderettes can cascade down below them. They are a classic addition to any plant collection. They have had a bad rap outside, as the roots can be hard to remove, and some people fear that they can become invasive in the right place. For this reason we don’t plant them outside.

Spider plants have long, thin leaves, easily reaching up to 40cm long if old enough. It will send off long tendrils in which new, small plants (spiderettes) will start to grow. These can be cut off and potted into their own pot.

Spider Plants are native to tropical and southern Africa and thrive in warm conditions.. In Wellington we use it as an indoor pot plant. It will grow up to 60cm high, with leaves becoming up to 40cm long. Flowers will form on a long inflorescence. Spider plants are very hardy and will survive most sun and shade positions. It can also survive irregular watering, although best to let it dry out slightly.

Please note that spiderettes are the small plants which shoot from the adult plant. If you are not confident at planting, you should purchase the adult plant. You will receive one spiderette that needs to be planted into wet soil as soon as possible.
