Heart Leaf Philodendron

Philodendron cordatum, more commonly as the Heartleaf Philodendron due to the cute shape of the leaves, is a must have indoor plant!

Heartleaf Philodendrons do well in a hanging pot or planted with some form of support to allow it to grow upwards, as they are a trailing vine.

The leaves can grow up to 15cm long and about 10cm wide, while the length of the vine is as big as you let it! Prune it back to get a bushier plant and to prevent it from going leggy.

Heartleaf Philodendrons are native to Brazil and Argentina, and likes warm, humid conditions but no direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves. However bright light and high humidity will help to leaves to grow bigger in size. In Wellington we use it as a decorative indoor plant to liven up any room! It will grow as big as you allow it to, if you’re finding it getting too leggy or better than you want, you can prune it back to help make it bushier at the base. Placing a stake inside the pot will help support it's vine-like growth patterns. Place in well-draining soil and allow it to dry out a decent amount between waterings.

As you can see from one of the pictures, this is one of my personal favourite plants. I have trained it around our defunct fireplace with the help of some 3M hooks and twine. The large picture is indicative of how it will grow- that plant is not for sale!
