Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

7.00

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a famed mediterranean herb that loves sun, sea and neglect. The variety we keep has very soft stems that don’t tend to go woody- many people refer to this as ‘wild thyme’.

Thyme is known to be a good lawn replacement in sunny, dry locations but I find that it requires a lot of weeding, so we stock a bushier variety than that advertised as creeping thyme. We use it as a groundcover around the base of fruit trees, as it tolerates a lot of fertiliser but doesn’t take it up, leaving the nutrients for the trees. Thyme also makes a surprisingly gorgeous border, as it doesn’t tend to get higher than 15cm and responds well to regular trimming. We regularly plant it against the edge of retaining walls where a hedge or fence is unnecessary, and it makes for a small, even border.

If you have a sunny spot and love to cook, this is an indispensable addition to your garden.

Flowers are bright purple and loved by bees.

We don’t offer discount cuttings of thyme as we keep it well trimmed for bushiness.
