Tradescantia purpurea

from 4.00

Tradescantia purpurea, commonly known as Purple Heart, is a beautifully coloured plant which is great for both an outdoor garden bed or in a pot inside.

We love to use it as an inside pot plant, as the deep purple colour is an amazing touch to any room. It also has an amazing growth style, with closely clumped together elongated leaves, very different to most other Tradescantia types.

Purple Heart leaves are a deep purple and can grow up to 10cm long. When placed in a sunny spot it will continue its deep colouring and thrive with regular watering - a very hardy and easy care plant!

Purple Heart is a native of Mexico, and thrives in warm and moist conditions. It is super hardy and will also survive with irregular watering. If not placed in full sun it does have a tendency to grow leggy and turn green. In Wellington we use it as an amazing addition to any indoor plant collection! It can grow to around 50cm in height, and loves to spread outwards. It also looks amazing in a hanging basket. If you want to contain the size of it, you can prune to the desired length.

Please note that cuttings are wrapped in wet newspaper, with no roots, in a small amount of soil. Because this plant is more clumping, with longer leaves, it is likely to be closer to a 5-7cm cutting than a 10cm cutting, but will grow just the same. If you are not confident at striking cuttings you should purchase the adult plant. You will receive one 7cm cutting that needs to be put 4cm deep into wet soil as soon as possible.
