Tradescantia sillamontana is native to Northeastern Mexico, and survives in dry conditions. In Wellington we use it as an indoor decorative plant, as the outside winter conditions can be too harsh.. It will grow where there is soil, so could potentially take over an entire garden bed, for this reason it is best kept in a pot to control growth - along with Wellington winters you will want it inside anyway.

This Tradescantia species is more succulent in nature than most other Tradescantias, meaning it requires a good sunny spot and a decent amount of water to grow at full potential.

Please note that cuttings are wrapped in wet newspaper, with no roots, in a small amount of soil. If you are not confident at striking cuttings you should purchase the adult plant. You will receive one 10cm cutting that needs to be put 4cm deep into wet soil as soon as possible.
