Climate change support

Over our time managing gardens in the Wellington area, we’ve learned a thing or two about adapting garden designs to suit Wellington soils and climate.

Wellington gardens: mostly clay, rarely flat, and battered about by the wind

We are told to mulch, but we can’t keep mulch on a steep bank without some tricks. Many plants need full sun, which for Wellington comes with too much wind for the plants to be happy.

Wellington gardens used to be mostly moist and temperate, but in our changing climate our gardens are seeing more intense weather swings, hotter summers, and sudden cold snaps. All of these changes cause our plants to struggle; especially in clay, where air and water levels are a bit less forgiving.

There are a range of techniques which we, the Very Green Gardener, use to combat weather changes, soil balance, and loss of ecosystem which comes with excess chemical use. We keep up with the latest technology and developments worldwide, and are constantly trying out and refining new techniques.

A very green consultation

Consultations used to be a large document which you could lug around and refer to in conversation but rarely read. We now offer an hourly rate for consultations, as well as phone, skype or in person visits at times which best suit you.

Full sustainability report

An in-person consultation resulting in a document outlining recommendations, such as:

  • Water tanks, natural water retention in the garden, ensuring your soil is moist in the summer and not a swamp in the winter

  • Sunlight and heat control: protecting delicate plants from the increasingly harsher conditions, ensuring that each plant gets what it needs in a low maintenance way

  • Tips and tricks to incorporate more edible plants into your garden in a low maintenance way

  • Pest control, from rats to aphids: how to use regenerative agriculture to support the good bugs and keep out the bad

  • Support to increase awareness about sustainable gardening and regenerative agriculture. This supports our soils into removing contaminants and becoming healthy again.

Climate change support

An in-person consultation resulting in a checklist and a document outlining what changes we recommend and how to make those changes.

How to adjust your garden with careful landscaping and planting in order to support it through the significant rain, weather changes, and extreme heat/cold.

“I’ll take my own notes” report

As you can imagine, most of the work involved in a sustainability report is the write up. You can have the same in person consultation as either the full sustainability report, or climate change support, but won’t receive a document, and we won’t charge you for the additional off-site time.

Cost
$200
Usual hourly rate charged to existing clients

Please note: We are sometimes able to provide consultations but be unable to fit you in for any physical work due to our existing client workload. Ask us - we’re happy to chat.
