Compost available from September 2023!
In 2020, we began composting for our own use. Most of our client’s green waste, if not able to be composted directly on their property, has been added to our composting piles and hot composted (heating the center up to over 60 degrees).
Once the piles have broken down, and looking like rich compost, we sieve off the inevitable chunks of branches that were in the piles, and bag it into recycled 40L compost/potting mix bags which community members donate (thank you zero waste groups!).
These bags are then carefully left open for venting, and wrapped in black plastic for a further 3 months. This is so that all of the compost has the best chance at killing off all of the weed seeds and other nasties. They are vented so that the natural exchange of gases can occur, and some of the moisture can leave too, which makes handling the compost a much lighter task!
After all of that, we are left with about 20-30 litres of compost per bag. We top up the bags, so they are 30 litres. This is about the size of the smaller bags you can buy at the garden centre.
You can pick it up straight from our composting site (Seatoun); our base of operations (Island Bay); or we can deliver for a set fee, which is a rate of $1.50/km from Seatoun, plus $5 for the unloading itself.
