Some cool things happening in Wellington this weekend
Hello! I hope you are enjoying the beautiful Autumn weather. A few events that I think should not go unnoticed have cropped up so I figured I should let everyone know-
This Saturday,
Otari Wilton’s Bush Trust
Have their monthly plant sale from 10-1pm, 160 Wilton rd, Wilton.
They have plant experts on the ground helping you with selection, check it out! Otari Wilton are also doing guided walks every Sunday in Autumn, I want to link to this Sundays but the eventfinda tickets are no longer on sale- so check out their website for the list, and hopefully one will tickle your fancy (I am particularly keen on “Introduction to the funghi kingdom,” in May).
On Sunday, WCC continue their focus on community gardens, and one of my favourites is up- the jewel in the crown, something I would recommend taking a look at simply to be able to say, “I know this place,” the Miramar Prison Garden. It is not inside of a prison, but it is highly valued by the locals, take a gander and see something new!
A gorgeous photo taken at the Miramar Prison Garden.
Miramar Prison Garden
Has an open day Sunday, 2-5pm, 1 Main Road, Miramar
Located at the northern end of the Miramar Peninsula on the site of the old Wellington Prison gardens, we have a long and interesting history. Today we provide a place for local people to come together – to grow produce, but also to participate in cultural, social and educational activities. Open Sunday activities will include guided tours of the historic garden, a simple koha BBQ, gardening and food workshops, an ‘Eat the Garden’ demonstration with Travelling Kitchen, and family-friendly activities.
Other community gardens up this week are Berhampore/Island Bay, Maupuia, Melrose, Hataitai and Lyall Bay. Check out the WCC website for all of the details.
All of these events have free mini-events where volunteers are helping to teach you about gardening. They are a lot of fun and full of passionate people who love to talk gardens… what more could you want?
Have a great week, everyone.
