The Very Hungry Gardener

from NZ$12.00

An indoor edible subscription- something we have been providing to friends for a while now- is now available nationwide.

Every month you will receive-

-2x herbs OR 2x vegetables (we recommend ordering both the herbs and vege boxes, to receive 4 pots per month), in pots, either at their adult size or close to it.

-Instructions for each pot, so you can keep your babies alive for as long as you’d like.

-Advice on how to grow them, if you want them long-term.

Regardless of your experience growing herbs or vegetables, you will find this kit a relatively simple way to learn how to incorporate homegrown food into your diet. We have been growing herbs and veges on our windowsill for years- there’s nothing better than cutting spring onion straight from the plant to use in your cooking, without a torch in the dark!

Because this is a monthly subscription, and many herbs and vegetables are seasonal, we recommend throwing caution to the wind and trusting our selection. If you’d like to trial a kit, but are worried you’ll be left with a weird plant that you don’t know how to eat, get in touch and we can let you know what’s on the menu in the coming months.

We are currently trialling an outdoor edibles box, filled with a seasonal plant selection for you to plant in the soil. If you would be interesed in this pack, get in touch and we can keep you updated.

FAQ

Is this the right box for me?

In order for you to grow the plants from this box, you will need to be able to give them a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight a day, inside or outside. Typically they grow best on the kitchen windowsill, and they have been trialled on a variety of kitchen windowsills. They absolutely will grow in a full sun or part shade garden bed outside. Each plant comes with its own specific set of instructions, including care instructions, but it is assumed that you will be able to water these plants and put them in direct sunlight.

Can I choose which plants I get?

No, sorry- the order you get your plants is predetermined based on season and the best time to grow them. These plants are all raised organically on a large scale to keep the cost low for you. There are recipe suggestions with each plant. They also make a great gift, if you really can’t stand something we include.

What size are the plants? How long will they last?

The plants arrive at a time that they are edible, but will do best with another 2-3 weeks of growing before fully harvesting. We like to choose plants that you will take a bit of every few nights, so they will last. If you put the plants into bigger pots, or have a garden that you can empty the soil into, the herbs will keep growing, and so will some of the plants.

Can I get it in a jar or mug instead of a pot?

YES! These come potted by default, because they are sold in pots usually. However, we are working towards our plants being sent out in more sustainable packaging like jars or mugs, instead of pots. This is because we do our absolute best to be zero waste and eco friendly- the mugs can be cleaned and sent to a second hand shop, and the glass jars can be recycled. You will notice that they are also delivered in re-purposed milk bottles- every part of the packaging is recyclable.

When can it be repotted?

We suggest that you leave your plant in the pot it arrives in for a week or so, in order for it to get used to its new growing conditions, before repotting.

Why are the roots exposed to sunlight when the plants are in jars?

Because we are still finalising our jar wrap designs, they won’t stay like that. In saying that, all of the plants were trialled with the roots exposed in this way so we could monitor growth speed and it didn’t seem to bother the plants in those jars.

If I order a gift box, can I choose the plants?

No, but you can contact us via the contact form if you’d like a special gift box sent out, and we can definitely help.
